Excited tourists and eager locals alike are clamoring to visit HollywOoOoOd.
Last night at the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony, none other than the legendary Tom Cruise passed the torch from Paris to Los Angeles, officially marking the beginning of LA’s sporty era. In an action-packed sequence, Cruise fearlessly dove off the Stade de France and landed on stage to greet LA Mayor Karen Bass, then immediately dashed off to embark on a Mission Impossible-esque journey. Riding a motorcycle out of the stadium, Cruise made his way to a plane, eventually parachuting out and landing near the city’s most iconic landmark, the Hollywood Sign.
While Cruise’s skydiving was undoubtedly impressive, it was his bold art project at the end of the presentation that made the biggest impression. With just a staple gun and a dream, Cruise made what is perhaps the second greatest alteration to the famous sign, adding the signature Olympic Rings.
Excited tourists and eager locals were abuzz online, many wondering if Cruise’s addition would remain for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, after some sleuthing and a look on the Live Hollywood Sign webcam, it appears the rings were digitally edited onto it solely for the closing ceremony. Disappointed users on the Los Angeles subreddit are pushing for the city to bring them back in the lead-up to LA’s Olympic Games in 2028.
So, while you can’t go take a picture of the HollywOoOoOd Sign with the rings, the Hollywood Sign itself still remains and is, in fact, accessible.
